Here's how to remove the rear bumper cover.
Preliminary Work
1 – Removing the luggage compartment floor trim panel
Remove luggage compartment floor trim panel (1).
2 – Removing the loading edge trim
Undo the hook and loop tape (1) and remove the warning triangle (2).
Loosen the expanding rivet (1).
Loosen screw (2).
Unclip loading edge trim upwards from latch mechanisms (3).
Thread the loading edge trim out under the sealing lip of the tailgate seal and remove it.
3 – Removing both luggage compartment wheel arch trim panels partially
▶ Partially remove luggage compartment wheel arch trim on left
Loosen expanding rivet (1).
Detach hinge cover (1) from the luggage compartment left wheel arch panel (2) and leave it hanging at the hinge bracket.
Slide left luggage compartment wheel arch panel (2) out under the sealing lip for the tailgate gasket and detach at the rear.
▶ Partially remove luggage compartment wheel arch panel on right
▷ If installed: Remove the emergency release handle for the tailgate (additional work in the US version)
Release the emergency release handle for tailgate (1) from the holder.
Detach Bowden cable (2) and remove the emergency release handle for tailgate (1).

Loosen expanding rivet (1).
Release the hinge cover (1) from the right luggage compartment wheel arch trim panel(2) and leave it hanging on the hinge bracket.
Guide out luggage compartment wheel arch trim panel (2) under the sealing lip of the tailgate seal and release it in the rear area.
4 – Removing both water channel covers
NOTICE
Description is for left component only. Procedure on the right side is identical.
▶ Remove water channel cover
Have the set of special tools 0 493 752 (00 9 329) ready.
Release clip (1) with a suitable tool.
Release the water channel cover (2) from the latch mechanisms (3) with a suitable tool and remove it to the top.
5 – Removing both rear lights on the side panel
NOTICE
Description is for left component only. Procedure on the right side is identical.
▶ Remove the rear light on the side panel
NOTICE
To provide a better overview: Schematic diagram with partially hidden components.
Loosen nuts (1).
Release the rear light on the side panel (1) in direction of arrow.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Observe note on unlocking and disconnecting plug connections.

Unlock and disconnect plug connection (2) as described in position #28 in additional information.
Remove the rear light on the side panel (1).
7 – Removing rear bumper trim
NOTICE
Perform the operations on the left and right side.

Loosen screws (1).
Loosen and remove rear bumper trim (2) starting at the wheel arch, along the dashed line from the latch mechanisms.
8 – Remove both exhaust covers
NOTICE
Description is for left component only. Procedure on the right side is identical.
▶ Remove exhaust cover
Loosen screws (1).
Remove exhaust cover (2).
9 – Remove rear bumper panel
NOTICE
To provide a better overview: Schematic diagram without rear wheel.
NOTICE
Perform the operations on the left and right side.
Unfasten nut (1).
Loosen screws (2).
NOTICE
Perform the operations on the left and right side.
Fold back the wheel arch cover (1).
Loosen screw (2).
NOTICE
Perform the operations on the left and right side.
Loosen screw (1).
NOTICE
Perform the operations on the left and right side.
Release the bumper panel from the lateral latch mechanisms (1).
Remove the number plate from the rear bumper panel.
Loosen the expanding rivet (2).
Together with an auxiliary person, release the bumper panel from the latch mechanisms (1) towards the rear.
Unlock plug connection (2) and disconnect.
Remove rear bumper panel (1).
